Construction Health and Safety Engineer – Milipitas, CA

Hourly Rate: $40.00 – $50.00                       Term of Contract: 9 months to Permanent        

BRIEF OVERVIEW:
Our client is looking for 2 Health & Safety Engineers with a Construction background. The Health and Safety Engineer is responsible for complex technical work in a wide range of H&S disciplines. Candidates should have direct supervisory experience of major construction projects and Cal-OSHA certification. Construction background or experience in manufacturing, raw materials, petroleum/oil refinery industries (highly preferred).
Job Description:
The Health and Safety Engineer is responsible for complex technical work in a wide range of H&S disciplines. By developing, implementing and maintaining programs, the H&S Engineer will help create and streamline the systems and procedures necessary to ensure the overall health and safety of employees and contractors. The overall goal is achieving compliance within the company and regulatory agency standards in each of these disciplines. The ideal candidate works well on both self-initiated projects and those driven by concerns and issues reported by co-workers. The ideal candidate also takes pride in his/her analytical abilities, organization skills and attention to detail. Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Ensure compliance with Local, State and Federal health and safety regulations. 
  • Develop, implement, and maintain H&S policies, plans, and procedures. 
  • Interface with Local, State and Federal regulatory agencies on complex permitting, reporting and related issues.
  • Evaluate construction contractors corporate safety programs for compliance with Cal-OSHA and company safety requirements.
  • Work with internal teams and contractors to provide technical expertise to health and safety  procedures in demolition and construction environments. 
  • Participate in daily construction safety walks and toolbox talks.
  • Assist in preparation and performance of safety meetings and training programs to ensure the effective communication of company policy and safety standards.
  • Lead and document accident/incident investigations to determine root cause, prevention and corrective measures. 
  • Develop, implement, and manage safety programs such as LOTO, Hazard Communication, Emergency Response, Fall Protection, Respiratory Protection, Hearing Conservation, etc.
  • Conduct trainings on the safety programs listed above. 
  • Recommend changes in policies, procedures, work environment and equipment to prevent accidents and illnesses. 
  • Incorporate ergonomics in the workplace. 
  • Conduct and review Job Hazard Analysis as required.
  • Drive continuous improvement programs.

 

Skills and Experience:

  • 5-7+ years of experience in a similar construction/manufacturing environment. 
  • Bachelors degree in Engineering, Occupational Health & Safety or equivalent is a plus. 
  • Superior knowledge of Fed OSHA/CAL-OSHA Standards. 
  • Minimum OSHA 510 and 511 recommended. OSHA 500/501 Certifications preferred.
  • An understanding of asbestos and lead abatement procedure a plus.
  • Knowledge of Local, State and Federal regulatory agencies and requirements.
  • The ability to facilitate meetings & training such as Contractor Safety Orientations, Fall protection, confined space, Lockout Tagout, Hazard Communications, etc.  
  • Ability to give clear direction and provide leadership to large groups.
  • Experience with emergency preparedness and crisis management. 
  • Exceptional presentation and interpersonal skills. 
  • Ability to work effectively and efficiently under pressure while managing competing demands and tight deadlines. 
  • Well organized with meticulous attention to detail. 
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills. 
  • Excellent Word, Excel, PowerPoint capabilities.
  • Bilingual in Spanish a plusHours of work:
    7am to 5pm, weekend work possible. May be working later hours periodically depending on work required. (12pm to 10pm for example; 1-4 times a month)
    40 normal hours per week with 10 over time hours.Travel between the Bay Area Factory and other company locations:
    Percentage breakdown: 90% Company Factory 10% Other
    Mileage will be reimbursed.

    For the right two candidates and if budget and headcount allow – there is potential for Temp to Perm conversion.
